Free Stacked Area Chart Maker — Paste Data, Download Instantly

A stacked area chart shows how a total is made up over time: each column is a band, and the top edge of the stack is the sum. Use it when both the overall level and the mix matter — total revenue split by channel, or traffic split by source, across a period.

Each column stacks on the one before it, so the top edge is the running total.

How it works

  1. Paste your table: the first column is the time or category axis, every other column becomes one band.
  2. Bands stack in column order, so put your steadiest series first if you want a calm baseline.
  3. Bands are solid-filled — unlike a plain area chart, they never overlap.
  4. Download a 2× PNG, or the .xlsx with a native stacked area chart you can keep editing.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a stacked bar chart?

Same data, different emphasis. Bars read as discrete periods; the area version reads as a continuous trend. Use bars when the individual periods matter, areas when the shape over time matters.

How is it different from a plain area chart?

A plain area chart overlays translucent series and they cover each other. A stacked area chart adds them up, so the top line is the total.

Can I reorder the bands?

The bands follow your column order, so reorder the columns in your table (or use the Transpose button) and the chart follows.
